Our bodies are home to over 100 trillion bacteria. They are everywhere. On the surface of our skin, inside our mouth, nose, gut, you name it and there is a bacterial resident living in it. Sure there are some nasty bacteria that can cause damage (like the ones we’re trying to wash away) but there are also some highly protective and neutralizing bacteria that help us stay healthy. Most people have heard about the healthy bacteria, probiotic bacteria, that helps our digestive tract to function properly but many of you may not have heard of the bacteria that influences our immune, endocrine, and neuronal systems.
Healthy bacteria have been known to treat an entire range of health conditions; from eczema to autoimmune disorders like lupus and allergies. Gastroenterologist at Harvard Medical University, Athos Bousvaros, commented that “it’s incredibly clear that these (healthy) bacteria in our gut are not just innocent bystanders, hanging out”. When asked whether they play a significant role in the digestion of food, production of vitamins, and help protect us from harmful pathogens, Dr. Bousvaros said “that’s all totally real”. Innocent, real…of course they are. My father and I have always said that the road to great health starts at the gut. It makes sense right? The “only” place your body is breaking down and absorbing the nutrients from your food is at the gut; bad gut…bad absorption system which equals to less nutrient availability for the body.
There is no question that probiotics can begin to restore that healthy balance of bacteria in your digestive tract. They help to break down foods, activate powerful enzymes, and help rid the body of waste and toxins. However, the issue is, how the heck do you get enough healthy bacteria or probiotics in the body to deal with all the stresses of the system? Well, I’m sure you’ve seen the ads with Yogurt. So yogurt and kefir are high in healthy bacteria, but so are foods like Sauerkraut, Miso Soup, and my favorite…Dark Chocolate!
